Breath is a biological process shared by everyone to sustain life. Responding to the theme "Social Ecology", my artwork draws inspiration from the basic living requirement of breathing and puts it into the urban scene to express the idea that no matter who we are and where we are from, we all breathe the same air and live in the same environment.
Breathing purifies our body. My artwork works as a representational sculpture that implies cleaning our city. This 3D installation consists of dismantled mop heads that are dyed into different shades of black and white, covering the hoarding wall. The mop fabric with its similitude to nasal hair creates a subtle movement in the wind that resembles the human action of breathing. The texture transforms the hard wall that fences out pedestrians into a soft surface that invites people to get closer.
The installation acts as an interactive attraction as well as a metaphorical figure for the university community. It provides a playful corner that allows campus passers-by to take a pause and pay attention to the physical space around them. People are welcome to touch the fabric, lean on it, play with it and even modify it. The intention of the artwork is to transform the giant urban construction site of NAS from a passage to a gathering spot.
